District Overview

Agency Mission:   To serve the people of Oregon through the protection, management, and promotion of a healthy forest environment which will enhance Oregon’s livability and economy for today and tomorrow
The West Oregon District, which is comprised of three unit offices (Philomath, Dallas, and Toledo) is one of five districts and two other “work centers” within the Northwest Oregon Area.  There are a total of fourteen districts and three areas within the Oregon Department of Forestry.  All perform similar work.  The West Oregon District, covering Benton, Lincoln, Polk, and southwest Yamhill counties, provides forest fire and insect and disease prevention, detection and suppression on approximately 1.1 million acres of forestland and contributes to an integrated forest protection system on a statewide basis.  It provides for cooperative work to public and private landowners to supplement the fire protection system. The district provides for environmental protection on commercial forestland through the administration of the Forest Practices Act; administers assistance programs to private forest landowners; and intensively manages approximately 36,634 acres of State Forest Lands on behalf of the Board of Forestry and the Department of State Lands.
The activities of the Department have direct effects on the local residents, forest landowners, and natural resources.  These activities may have significant impacts on social and economic aspects of business and local communities.  The district accomplishes this work with a biennial budget of approximately seven million dollars and employment of 25 permanent and 20 seasonal employees

Woodcutting Permits / Special Forest Product Permits

The ODF West Oregon District has sold all available firewood cutting permits for the Fall 2013 season.  Personal Use Firewood Permit List. Additional woodcutting permit opportunities are available from the Tillamook District and Forest Grove District offices. When available, permits will be issued after the close of fire season according to the order of names on the list. Permits are $20 for 2 cords of wood.  At this time, we are not placing any names on a waiting list.
Additional Information:
• No firewood permits are issued in active timber sale areas.
• There are currently several active timber harvest areas which will expire this year.  After these are completed, and if there are cull logs or slash left on the landings, these areas will be designated for personal use permit firewood cutting.
• Timber harvest areas where wood is left along dirt roads are typically not opened to personal use firewood cutting for safety reasons and in order to protect the road surfaces.
• Timber harvest areas where wood is left behind locked gates are typically not opened to personal use firewood cutting.  Often these gates are there to protect private landowner’s property.
• In general, personal use firewood permits are not issued for random or scattered downed wood.  This is due to the fact that district lands are intermixed with private land.  Unless district personnel know that the wood is located on ODF land, we will not issue a permit.
Special Forest Product permits are sold in the West Oregon District Office in Philomath on Wednesdays.  Call the office for specific questions regarding salal, mushroom, oregon grape, vine maple, and other forest product permits.
