Firewood

Firewood helps heat your home and fuel your campfire. ODF offers firewood cutting permits on state forestland. Firewood cutting dates and prices vary by location. Permits are often first-come, first-served, and not issued during fire season or in active timber sale areas. Permits are not available to purchase online. Call your local district office for the latest updates on where, when, and how much you can cut or view the map below.

Firewood cutting is also permitted on other public and private forestlands. See resources below to contact the US Forest Service or BLM for more information. Please note that gathering wood for personal use while camping in Oregon's state forests is allowed without obtaining a permit.

Some general tips for collecting firewood on state forestland:

  • Downed wood and logs only: No cutting standing trees (alive or dead)
  • Only take wood less than 12 inches in diameter
  • Be safe and always go prepared: Wear eye and ear protection
Full rules can be found in ORS 164.813 and OAR 629-050-0040.

Firewood gathering is available on the areas indicated on the map. Zoom in on the map to view more information.
