Welcome to the Oregon Department of Forestry's North Cascade District

The North Cascade District manages the 47,871-acre Santiam State Forest, provides fire protection to 652,000 acres of public and private forestlands, and provides assistance to private forestland owners and ensures best management practices are followed on forestland, in compliance with the Forest Practices Act.

The District is comprised of two unit offices - the Molalla Unit and the Santiam Unit in Lyons. We invite you to visit our website, explore the North Cascade District, and learn more and enjoy Oregon's many forest benefits that are protected and managed in compliance with the Forest Practices Act.

Recreation - Santiam State Forest Campgrounds Open Thursday, May 24, 2012

The North Cascade District offers a range of recreation activities in the Santiam State Forest - an actively managed forest that provides a multitude of benefits to Oregonians. Santiam State Forest campgrounds open for the 2012 season on Thursday, May 24. This includes the popular Butte Creek Falls area which had been temporarily closed to provide for public safety during recent forest management actvities.

The Oregon Department of Forestry's North Cascade District invites you to discover your Santiam State Forest, located about 30 miles east of Salem. The forest is actively managed to provide a range of benefits from wood products to wildlife habitat to recreation opportunities.

Burning Information
In the North Cascade District, open burning is the leading cause of wildfires. The Oregon Department of Forestry wants your burning operations to be as safe and successful as possible, and for you to clearly understand your responsibilities. More information on burning is available on this website and by contacting our offices.
Woodcutting Permits
Woodcutting permits for personal use are available on the North Cascade District when the district is not in fire season. Woodcutting season will generally last from October to June (weather-dependent).
Special Forest Products

The Oregon Department of Forestry has guidelines for the removal of forest products from state forest lands in northwest Oregon - moss, ferns, rock, bark, and more.

The North Cascade District does not currently issue Special Forest Product permits.
