Waterfalls on the Santiam State Forest
Upper Butte Creek Falls
Upper Butte Creek Falls

Millions of years ago, mighty lava flows created the rock beneath the Santiam State Forest.  Today, lush forests cover the ancient lava flows.  Clear, crisp streams flow and tumble over a mighty foundation of volcanic rock to create breathtaking waterfalls.  While you explore the forest you may encounter many hidden waterfalls among the trees.  Three of the most spectacular waterfalls found on the Santiam State Forest are Shellburg Falls and Upper and Lower Butte Creek Falls.

The short and scenic Shellburg Falls Trail passes behind the waterfall, which plunges 100 feet from the edge of a basalt cliff into a foamy pool. Nearby, you will find nearly six miles of multi-use trails, as well as a small, developed campground nestled in a moss-draped forest of Douglas-fir and hemlock.  Shellburg Falls is open to walk-in access year round and seasonally to drive-in access.

Lower Butte Creek Falls
Lower Butte Creek Falls
Located near Scotts Mills, the Butte Creek Waterfalls offer two very unique experiences.
You may view Lower Butte Creek Falls from a high rock out cropping as it tumbles 80 feet to a series of deep pools.
An enormous basalt ledge forms the Upper Butte Creek Falls. Visitors may explore deep into a cave formed by this ledge, while Butte Creek flows over them, before cascading 40 feet into a wide clear pool. This pool is excellent for swimming and cooling off during hot summer days.  During the winter months, both waterfalls are extremely powerful and turbulent. Butte Creek Falls is to walk-in access year-round and open seasonally to drive-in access. Each winter, the gates will be locked on either side of the Butte Creek Falls trail system. These gates will re-open prior to Memorial Day weekend.
