GENERAL INFORMATION
- This position is with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife located at the Elkhorn Wildlife Area in North Powder.
- Be sure to mark 31F (North Powder) in the Geographic Availability Section of the PD100 application form.
- THIS IS A SEASONAL POSITION FROM JANUARY 1, 2010 TO MAY 31, 2010.
- The employee in this position will be represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and will be subject to all provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
- This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified people.

TO QUALIFY
Your PD100 application form will be reviewed to verify that you meet the qualifications stated in this section. To receive credit, your application form must clearly show that you have:
- An Associate’s degree in Wildlife Technology or Agriculture; OR
- Eighteen months of experience in the care of livestock, agricultural research and experimentation, monitoring game or wildlife, or farming (Up to nine months of fisheries or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience).
A higher level degree in Wildlife Science, Agriculture, or a closely-related degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework will substitute for the Associate’s degree.
Note: All applicants must submit a photocopy of all transcripts required to qualify with their application to receive credit for college degrees or coursework unless they are permanent employees of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. However, permanent ODFW employees should be prepared to provide copies of college transcripts upon request as they may be required if it is not clear whether a degree is closely-related. Credits must be from an accredited college or university. Transcripts must include coursework and indicate that a degree was conferred, if applicable. Online transcripts are acceptable.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Wildlife Area Technician will assist the wildlife area manager with implementation of planned projects and daily activities to achieve program objectives consistent with the department’s goals and Federal Aid Work Plan. The major roles and responsibilities of this position are to:
- Provide supplemental feed for wintering deer and elk. Load, unload, and haul feed (800 tons of hay and 100 tons of pellets) annually. Operate trucks, pickups, tractor, cats, grader, backhoe and all terrain vehicle and snowmobiles. Determine daily amounts of feed consumed and distributed. Keep daily feed records.
- Perform maintenance and development duties. Operate tractors, plows, discs, harrows, drills, fertilizer spreaders and other farm implements. Operate a wide variety of power tools, hand tools, shop tools, pumps, chainsaws, etc. Conduct preventative and corrective maintenance on all equipment, farm implements and vehicles. Maintain and construct area fences. Maintain and construct area bird nest structures. Conduct maintenance on area irrigation ditches and canals. Maintain area buildings and public use facilities including: construction, painting, plumbing, etc. Construct, install and repair informational and regulatory signs on the wildlife area.
- Provide information to the public, landowners, sportsmen groups, and other agencies in person and by phone. Conduct tours of the wildlife area.
- Conduct wildlife captures on the wildlife area and in the region. Construct traps. Assist in blood or tissue sample collection. Conduct tagging, collaring, marking or banding of wildlife. Transport wildlife. Monitor wildlife for injuries or disease.
- Keep weekly itinerary of completed tasks. Use computers, typewriters, copiers and fax machines. Use two way radios.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Work is performed outdoors. Inclement weather dominates 5 months of the year with employee completing assignments in temperatures as low as -40 degrees F and snow depths of 5 feet.
- Requires lifting up to 50 pound (or more with assistance) sacks of seed, fertilizer, etc.
- This position requires an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Education Card for on the job use of quads and three-wheeled ATVs (Class 1 ATVs) obtained through the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, accessible at the following website: www.rideatvoregon.org/. If the selected applicant does not possess this certification, s/he must obtain it within six months of hire as a condition of continued employment.
- This position requires occasional use of a firearm to deliver immobilization drugs and projecting nets for wildlife capture, euthanizing injured or sick wildlife, killing or hazing nuisance animals and birds, collecting animals for research or other studies, and protection from dangerous animals in close quarters. The successful candidate will be subject to an initial criminal history background check with fingerprinting to verify s/he may legally possess a firearm before being hired into this position, and will be subject to annual criminal history checks thereafter.
- Work week includes weekends and holidays during the feeding season.
- This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. May require working long hours, before sunrise and after sunset, and on weekends.
NOTE: You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record.
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will check driving records for in-state finalists. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current driving record for review.
NOTE: Within three-days of hire, applicants will be required to complete the U.S. Department Homeland Security’s I-9 form confirming authorization to work in the United States. ODFW is not able to support VISA sponsorships.
