(Microcomputer/Network Specialist, Tier 1)

$3,259 - $4,493 MONTHLY


GENERAL INFORMATION
  • This position is with Information Systems Division (ISD) of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and is located in Salem.
  • This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified people. The list will be used to fill the current vacancy only.
  • The employee in this position will be represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and will be subject to all provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.

TO QUALIFY
 
Your resume will be reviewed to verify that you meet the qualifications stated in this section. To receive credit, you must clearly describe how you have: 
  • A Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in computer science; OR

  • An Associate degree in computer science or college-level coursework that included 30 quarter (20 semester) computer science credits and one year of professional consultative, technical, or administrative experience which includes designing, constructing, and analyzing information systems. Experience must have included installing, repairing, upgrading, troubleshooting and supporting Personal Computers (PCs) and laptops in a network environment; OR

  • Three years of professional information systems experience as described above.

Preference may be given to applicants with professional experience supporting computers in a helpdesk environment; excellent customer service skills, troubleshooting ability, enterprise desktop optimization and tuning, disk imaging and/or MCSE certification.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
The Microcomputer/Network Specialist will provide technical support, diagnostic help and operating instruction for users of microcomputers and data communications networked hardware and systems software. S/he will directly assist the department’s technical services supervisor to analyze, design, and implement most facets of the department’s data communications systems hardware and networking systems software. The major roles and responsibilities of this position are to:
  • Install, upgrade and maintain department workstations with XP and/or Windows 07 operating systems, Office 2003 and/or 2007 and other software as needed.

  • Perform software and hardware troubleshooting on department computers.

  • Install, update and maintain Bridge software used by the department to access the Unisys mainframe.

  • Execute programs that run on Unisys system for controlled hunts, file transfers, draw file processing for hunter licensing and printing reports from Unisys.

  • Perform hardware and communications software upgrades including memory, video cards, hard drives, printer drivers, and communications devices.

  • Configure workstations for wireless as requested for select areas with wireless access points.

  • Provide exemplary service to customers using follow-up procedures and eliciting feedback from users to improve customer service.

  • Troubleshoot workstation client, printing, Office 2003 and 2007, and email problems and record issues and solutions in Footprints help desk software.

  • Use remote access technologies, diagnose, research and resolve off-site workstation issues and record the issues and resolution in Footprints help desk software.

  • Communicate and arrange time with users for upgrades and machine maintenance for local offices and remote locations.

  • Research issues on TechNet, Google, Help Desk tickets, vendors, and whatever means possible to provide fast and accurate resolution to user issues.

  • Configure network and Unisys printers.

  • Perform price quotes of workstations, ancillary hardware and peripherals for users and ISD staff.

  • Assist with the procurement process for processing orders.

  • Handle decommissioning of equipment for removal from company tax rolls.

  • Assist information security officer with the development of security procedures for the department.

  • Monitor log and other network information for security violations and log help desk tickets, and report them to security officer and management.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Work is conducted primarily in an office environment involving a high degree of independence.

  • Performs a high volume of detailed, technical work in a variety of working environments.

  • Requires extensive statewide travel when conducting sites visits, at time over isolated and weathered roads, including overnight stays.

  • Required to lift and transport computer hardware, software and data communications peripherals, such as servers, switches, routers, terminals, micros, printers, modems, and cabling on a regular basis.

  • May be required to work overtime or odd hours to meet workload demands. Must be able to coordinate activities with department users and systems professionals having varying work shift hours.

  • This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day.

  • This position has been designated as sensitive in that the incumbent in this position provides information technology services and has control over, or access to information technology systems that would allow the person in the position to harm the information technology systems or the information contained in the systems. The successful candidate will be subject to an initial criminal history background check with fingerprinting and will be subject to annual criminal history checks thereafter.
NOTE: You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record.
 
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will check driving records for in-state finalists. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current driving record for review.
