What do the Oregon Department of Transportation and the trucking industry have in common? Safety. Safety is the top priority for both ODOT and its trucking industry partners. Both have a goal of reducing the number of commercial vehicle crashes on Oregon highways.
Oct. 21-28, ODOT, trucking organizations, law enforcement and other safety partners will work together on Operation Safe Driver 2007. Operation Safe Driver 2007 is a nationwide campaign to improve commercial driver safety through effective enforcement, education, and awareness.
“The main focus of this campaign is to increase drivers’ knowledge and awareness of how to operate their vehicles safely,” said David McKane, ODOT Motor Carrier Investigations, Safety and Federal Programs manager. “Research shows that driving safely reduces crashes significantly.”
On Oct. 23, 24, and 25, ODOT and its safety partners will host an open house from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at the Woodburn Port of Entry on Interstate 5 southbound just north of Woodburn. Drivers and carrier officials are invited to stop in for refreshments and visit with representatives from the Oregon Trucking Association, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, ODOT, law enforcement and other safety organizations. Drivers can get information on truck safety regulations, winter driving tips, ODOT’s TripCheck travel information system and much more.
“We’ve never had this kind of event before,” said McKane. “We hope drivers will stop by and take advantage of the opportunity to talk with safety officials in this non-regulatory setting. We can learn from each other. Working together we can make a difference.”
