Motorists should expect delays as repair work continues

ELKTON — Starting at 8 p.m., one lane of traffic will reopen on Oregon Highway 38 (Umpqua Highway) following a landslide that caused a two-day closure. Motorists should expect delays as clean-up and repair work continues through Friday, Dec. 14.

"The contractor (Haley Construction of Canyonville) worked all night and did a fantastic job," said Oregon Department of Transportation District Manager Darrin Neavoll. "About 3,000 cubic yards of material was cleared off the highway and the contractor did it ahead of schedule.

"There’s still quite some clean-up work ahead of us. We’ll do more scaling (rock removal) and, as soon as the rain lets up, we’ll repair the damaged section of highway."

The landslide occurred at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4. Rocks and other debris fell along a 200-foot section west of mile post 27. Motorists were directed to use Oregon Highways 42 or 126 as alternate routes during the closure.

ODOT estimates the clean-up and repair costs will exceed $200,000. The damaged section of highway will be repaved as soon as weather permits. Until then, motorists will travel on a single lane of gravel with flaggers providing traffic control.

"The quick response was great," Neavoll said. "Initially, we had hoped to reopen the highway by Saturday. Our maintenance crews, our technical staff and the contractor worked well together and, as a result, we reopened the highway two days early."
