LA GRANDE, Ore. – A sub-committee of the North East Area Commission on Transportation (NEACT) will meet Dec. 18 to discuss proposed changes in funding for transportation modernization projects identified in the approved 2008–2011 State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP).  The seven member committee, along with representatives from the Oregon Department of Transportation and other key stakeholders will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the east conference room at the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) Region 5 Headquarters, located at 3012 Island Avenue, La Grande, Oregon. The group was selected by the NEACT to re-prioritize projects affected by a shortfall of funds resulting from lower than expected revenues and higher than expected expenditures.

The Oregon Transportation Commission has directed that the Modernization portion of the approved 2008-2011 STIP be reduced statewide by $70 million.  The NEACT share of this reduction is approximately $4.2 million.  The STIP Modernization Program includes projects that improve or expand the existing transportation system such as: widening highway sections; adding new curb and sidewalks; adding passing or turn lanes; or constructing new roadways.

Northeast Oregon area transportation projects to be discussed include passing lane projects in Baker County, storm water improvements in Union County, intersection improvements in Morrow County and turn lane improvements in Morrow and Umatilla counties.

More information regarding this Dec. 18 meeting is available by contacting ODOT Public Information Officer Tom Strandberg at (541) 963-1330, or via email at thomas.m.strandberg@odot.state.or.us.

The NEACT, comprised of transportation stakeholders from Morrow, Umatilla, Union, Wallowa and Baker counties, and the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, helps identify and prioritize transportation-related projects in the five-county area. The meeting location is accessible to persons with disabilities, per the Americans with Disabilities Act. The general public is invited to attend.

An Area Commission on Transportation is an advisory body chartered by the Oregon Transportation Commission to help address all aspects of transportation. More information about ACTs is available at the ODOT Web Site at  www.oregon.gov/ODOT/COMM/act_main.shtml.
