Overview

This page provides information about how to apply for a different license plate for your vehicle.

You may use the links below to go directly to any section:
Apply Using Renewal Reminder
Follow the instructions below if you have a renewal reminder and want to change to a plate type that is listed as an option on the reminder:
  • Choose the type of plate you would like from the options provided.
  • Calculate and pay the applicable license plate fees and special registration surcharges.
  • Write the type of plate you want on your renewal reminder and include the fees with your registration renewal payment.
  • Mail your renewal reminder and payment to DMV, or
  • Visit a DMV office to renew and change plates (You may or may not be able to receive your new plates at the DMV office depending on the type of plate you request).
DMV mails renewal reminders about 45 days before the vehicle registration expiration date.  If you have lost your renewal reminder, you may contact DMV for a duplicate, or refer to the Apply Without Renewal Reminder section below.

Apply Without Renewal Reminder
Follow the instructions below if it is between registration renewal times for your vehicle, you do not have a renewal reminder, or you want a type of plate that is not listed as an option on your renewal reminder:
  • Complete an Application for Registration or Replacement Plates and/or Stickers (Form 735-268).
  • Calculate the fees:
    • Determine the registration fee (based upon your vehicle type).
    • Add the $24 plate fee for a set of plates or $12 plate fee for a single plate.
    • Add the plate surcharge (based upon the license plate type).
    • Add the replacement fee:
      • Between renewal periods: $10 replacement fee (If 120 days or more before registration expires, for two-year registration).
      • At renewal: $5 replacement fee (You can renew up to 120 days before your registration expires).
      • When changing to a different class of registration, there is no replacement fee (Examples are when you change from Passenger to Truck, Special Interest, or Disabled Veteran).
  • Mail your completed application and fees (make checks or money orders payable to "Oregon DMV") to:
DMV Vehicle Mail
1905 Lana Ave NE

Salem, OR 97314
  • You may also take your application and fees to a DMV office (DMV offices only accept checks, money orders, or cash).
