What's New in the Oregon Driver Manual
Details
The 2010-2011 Oregon Driver Manual (Form 735-37) has been updated to include recent law changes. Those changes include:
  • Cell phone use - Persons of any age may not use a mobile communication device while operating a motor vehicle. An exception is made for individuals 18 years of age or older using a hands-free accessory. For individuals under 18, it remains unlawful to operate a motor vehicle while using any mobile communication device. This includes texting or talking on a cell phone, even with a hands-free accessory. (HB 2377)
  • Move over - Roadside assistance and tow vehicles were added to the list of vehicles that drivers are required to maintain a safe distance from. A person approaching an emergency vehicle, roadside assistance vehicle, tow vehicle, or ambulance that is stopped and displaying warning lights must change lanes or slow down at least five miles per hour under the posted speed limit. (HB 2040)
  • Insurance requirements - For policies issued or renewed after January 1, 2010, the coverage was increased to $20,000 per accident for damage to the property of others. (HB 2326)
Additional language was added and clarifications made throughout the manual. A few of those items include:
  • Information on how to obtain a Statement of Enrollment form for home-schooled students was added (page 6).
  • The section on traffic signals was reorganized (pages 24-26).
  • Pavement marking diagrams were redesigned and reorganized. Additional diagrams were added to show lane drop lines, wide solid white lines, and yield lines among others (pages 27-31).
  • Information on bike boxes and bike sharrows was added (page 82).
We always try to improve the accuracy, ease of reading, and consistency of the Driver Manual.  If you have any suggestions or comments, please contact:
