How to Renew Your License or ID Card
You Will Need To...
  • Visit your local DMV office
  • Provide  proof of legal presence, full legal name, identity and date of birth.  If the name on your source document differs from the name you are applying under, you will need to provide additional documents to prove your name change.
  • Provide proof of your social security number (SSN)
  • If your address has changed you will be required to present proof of address
  • If you are 50 years old (or older) on the renewal date of your driver license, you will need to pass the vision screening test
  • Answer medical questions: All driver license applicants must answer a series of medical questions when applying for an original, renewal or replacement driver license (OAR 735-062-0000(2)).  If you answer “yes” to one of the medical questions, indicating you have a medical condition that makes you unable to drive safely, you are not eligible for a license.  DMV will not be able to issue you a license until you have established that your medical condition does not affect your ability to drive safely.  To do so, DMV may ask you to provide additional medical information and/or pass DMV tests.
  • Pay the renewal fee. (Note: DMV does not accept credit or debit cards; however ATMs are available at most DMV offices.)
NOTE: Postcard renewal reminders are mailed to driver license holders two months prior to expiration of the driver license. If you do not receive a postcard renewal reminder in the mail, you are still required to renew your driver license in person at a DMV office prior to expiration.

After you meet all requirements, you will be issued an interim card to use until you receive your license in the mail.

Special Circumstances
Out of State/Out of Country
If you are temporarily outside of the state and cannot come to an Oregon DMV office, you may call DMV at (503) 945-5400, send an online request or write DMV requesting information regarding eligibility for a Valid With Previous Photo driver license.

Expired Driver License?
If your driver license has expired, you have up to one year after expiration to renew before you would be required to retake the vision,  knowledge and drive tests.

Commercial Driver License
If you are renewing a commercial driver license you will need to satisfy additional requirements.
