HAZMAT Background Check Presentation on DMV Web
May 26, 2005
With background checks required as of May 31 for issuance or renewal of a commercial driver license with a hazardous materials endorsement, DMV has posted a presentation on its Web site to explain the requirements.
As of May 31, Oregon DMV will not renew a hazardous materials endorsement with a commercial driver license renewal without prior completion of a background check. Under USA Patriot Act regulations, all CDL holders must submit fingerprints to obtain security clearance from the U.S. Transportation Security Administration before issuance or renewal of a commercial driver license that includes a HAZMAT endorsement.
To view the presentation, go to OregonDMV.com. In the “highlights” section, click on “New HAZMAT endorsement requirements,” then under the “Oregon HAZMAT Endorsements Requirements Presentation” section, click on “presentation.” Visitors must have the Flash plug-in installed to view the presentation.
The background check requirement for new applicants for the HAZMAT endorsement – or those whose HAZMAT endorsements have lapsed – began Jan. 31. The May 31 cutoff adds renewals for current HAZMAT holders to the background check requirement.
Commercial drivers must obtain an Oregon CDL (if they do not already have one) prior to applying for a background check and submitting fingerprints and fees.
The background check will be conducted by a private contractor, Integrated Biometric Technologies (IBT), approved by the federal Transportation Safety Administration. IBT will gather information from the applicant, collect the background check fees and fingerprints.
To start the background check process, drivers first should contact IBT at 1-877-429-7746 or www.hazprints.com to complete the application and pay the fee by debit or credit card. They can go to an IBT site in Portland, Medford or La Grande to submit fingerprints. Drivers who wish to pay the fee in person must bring a money order; the sites don’t accept cash, checks or debit/credit cards. Drivers can also submit finger prints in any other state where IBT is providing the required background checks. To find finger print collection sites in other states check the IBT Web site or contact IBT.
Current IBT sites include:
- Portland – 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at Examination Management Services Inc., 2202 Lloyd Center, 503-249-7890.
- La Grande – 2 to 6 p.m. Mondays at the Flying J Truck Plaza, located off Exit 265 on Interstate 84 in La Grande.
- Medford – 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays at the Medford DMV, 1174 Progress Drive, Suite 103.
