| How to Apply |
|
To apply for a customized plate, you must:
The process of ordering customized plates usually takes 8-10 weeks. If your requested configuration is not available, you will be notified sooner.

| Constructing Your Message |
|
When constructing your plate message:
- You can have from one to six characters on a custom plate;
- In addition to the six characters, you are allowed one extra space or hyphen (indicate in the application where the hyphen or space should go);
- You can fill each character block with a letter, number, or hyphen, or you may leave some blank;
- With the exception of the hyphen, NO special characters or punctuation marks are allowed (such as # . ’ ! $ & " ?);
- You may not use three numbers followed by three letters or three letters followed by three numbers;
- Be sure to write clearly, distinguishing Z’s from 2’s, S’s from 5’s, I’s from 1’s; and
- Be sure to show where you want any spacing (especially if you do not want lettering to cover the tree portion of your plate), otherwise, all characters will be centered on the plate.

| Restrictions to the Message |
|
You cannot customize a group plate (like veteran plates, college/university plates, etc.).
DMV denies requests for any combination of letters and numbers that may be viewed as objectionable. Objectionable combinations include those that would, by means of foreign or slang words or phrases, by use of phonetic, numeric or reverse spelling, or when viewed as a mirror image, have the effect of alarming, threatening, offending, or misleading a reasonable person.
Such choices may include, but are not limited to, combinations of letters and/or numbers that:
- Refer to intimate bodily parts or to sexual or excretory functions;
- Refer in an alarming or offensive manner to a person or class of persons on the basis of race, color, gender, ethnic heritage, national origin, or other characteristic;
- Suggest that the vehicle to which the custom plate is issued is an official vehicle of a public agency when it is not;
- Refer to illegal acts; or
- Refer to alcoholic beverages or controlled substances or paraphernalia used in the consumption thereof.

| Determining If Message Is Available |
|
DMV has issued custom plates for years now, so many custom messages are already taken. On the application, you can request alternatives in case your preferred choice is already taken.
If all of your choices are already taken, DMV will notify you.

| Retaining the Use of Your Plate Message |
|
If a custom plate is not renewed within 30 days from the expiration of the vehicle registration period, the custom plate choice is considered available for approval and assignment to anyone else on a first come, first served basis.

| Transferring a Custom Plate |
|
Customized plates with current registration may be transferred to a like vehicle. Please see plate transfer for more information.

Custom Tree Plate
|
Plate Fees: $55.00 per set ($50.00 custom fee + $5.00 plate fee) for a two-year registration period. The custom fee is due again at renewal.
Replacement Fee: $5.00 at renewal; $10.00 between renewals (charged when changing to this plate type or replacing the plate).
Proceeds Benefit: Oregon passenger rail programs.
Available For: Passenger Vehicles

Custom Salmon Plate
|
Plate Fees: $85.00 per set ($50 custom fee + $30.00 Salmon surcharge + $5.00 plate fee) for a two-year registration period. The custom fee and the Salmon surcharge are due again at renewal.
Replacement Fee: $5.00 at renewal; $10.00 between renewals (charged when changing to this plate type or replacing the plate).
Proceeds Benefit: Custom fee supports Oregon passenger rail programs, and Salmon plate surcharge supports the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board and Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.
Available For: Passenger Vehicles

Custom Crater Lake Plate
|
Plate Fees: $75.00 per set ($50.00 custom fee + $20.00 Crater Lake surcharge + $5.00 plate fee) for a two-year period. The custom fee is due again at renewal. The $20.00 Crater Lake surcharge is a one-time surcharge.
Replacement Fee: $5.00 at renewal; $10.00 between renewals (charged when changing to this plate type or replacing the plate).
Proceeds Benefit: Custom fee supports Oregon passenger rail programs, and Crater Lake plate surcharge supports Crater Lake National Park.
Available For: Passenger Vehicles

Custom Cultural Plate
|
Plate Fees: $85.00 per set ($50.00 custom fee + $30.00 Cultural surcharge + $5.00 plate fee) for a two-year period. The custom fee and the Cultural surcharge are due again at renewal.
Replacement Fee: $5.00 at renewal; $10.00 between renewals (charged when changing to this plate type or replacing the plate).
Proceeds Benefit: Custom fee supports Oregon passenger rail programs, and Cultural plate surcharge supports The Oregon Cultural Trust.
Available For: Passenger Vehicles

Custom Motorcycle/Moped Plate
|
Plate Fees: $53.00 ($50.00 custom fee + $3.00 plate fee) for a two-year period. The custom fee is due again at renewal.
Replacement Fee: $5.00 at renewal; $10.00 between renewals (charged when changing to this plate type or replacing the plate).
Proceeds Benefit: Oregon passenger rail programs.
Available For: Motorcycles and Mopeds
(Custom motorcycle and moped plates are available on yellow background plates only.)

Motor Home Custom Plate
|
Additional Fees: $55.00 ($50.00 custom fee + $5.00 plate fee) for a two-year period. The custom fee is due again at renewal.
Replacement Fee: $5.00 at renewal; $10.00 between renewals (charged when changing to this plate type or replacing the plate).
Proceeds Benefit: Oregon passenger rail programs.
Available For: Motor Homes
(Custom motor home plates are available on yellow background plates only.)

Custom Camper or Recreational (Travel) Trailer Plate
|
Additional Fees: $53.00 ($50.00 custom fee + $3.00 plate fee) for a two-year period. The custom fee is due again at renewal.
Replacement Fee: $5.00 at renewal; $10.00 between renewals (charged when changing to this plate type or replacing the plate).
Proceeds Benefit: Oregon passenger rail programs.
Available For: Campers and Recreational Trailers
