The Bridge Engineering Section is part of the Technical Services Branch in the Highway Division. It is responsible for the design standards, load capacity evaluation, inspection and asset management for all State highway structures, including almost 2700 highway bridges and overcrossings, plus railroad undercrossings, tunnels, and other structural elements.
Consulting services are provided to all units of the Department of Transportation to ensure the above systems are constructed, maintained and rehabilitated to the highest professional standard.
The Bridge Engineering Section is composed of a Bridge Program Team, a Bridge Operations/ Standards Team, and a Bridge Preservation Engineering Team. There is a staff of approximately 48 permanent employees.
The Bridge Administration Team consists of the State Bridge Engineer and an administrative support group for the other Bridge Teams.
The Bridge Program Team is responsible for the development, implementation and operation of the Bridge Management System. It provides system-wide condition analysis and reporting to support bridge programming decisions. This team also provides load rating analysis and management of load capacity and restriction issues to protect public safety.
The Bridge Operations/Standards Team provides expertise and sets professional standards for bridge structural design and drafting and maintains the ODOT Bridge Design and Drafting Manual. It is also responsible for the management of the Oregon Bridge Inspection Program and for the assurance of operation of the program in accordance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS). Bridge inspection services are provided statewide through region-located employees, and for local agency bridge owners through consultant services.
The Bridge Preservation Engineering Team is responsible for the complete development of contract plans and specifications for assigned projects, primarily rehabilitation and cathodic protection of coastal bridges, rehabilitation and upgrade of movable bridges, heated bridge deck deicing systems, coating and metallization of steel bridges, fracture mitigation and repair, plus instrumentation and remote communication for seismic and other data collection systems for structures.
