| Overview |
|
Although historically overlooked, culverts are an integral part of the highway system and like other infrastructure they are subject to deterioration. ODOT is responsible for maintaining these drainage systems to assure safety of the public and protect highway assets.
ODOT has embarked on a comprehensive program to inventory and accurately assess the condition of culverts located along the State’s highways. The focus is on culverts that range from 12 inches up to 20 feet in span. The goal of this effort is to set a consistent statewide standard for inventorying and rating culverts, as well as uploading this information into ODOT’s Drainage Facilities Management System database.
Data Collection
To date approximately 4000 culverts have been inventoried and assessed out of an estimated 30,000 culverts. The files listed below only show the culverts along the completed segments of the highway system.
1R Culvert Training
The 1R inventory is best described as a basic inventory. Information collected for this level would include site location, barrel data, and geometric information. This basic information is the “core” of the information needed to populate a 1R culvert inventory and is required to be collected for all ODOT 1R projects.
The training provided is to help field crews with the 1R culvert information down loaded from the FACS STIP tool in spreadsheet. Field crews should follow the contents of this training as closely as possible to ensure program wide uniformity and consistency.

Drainage ID Markers
The purpose of the Drainage ID Markers is to set a consistent statewide standard for marking culverts less than 20 feet in culvert span. The installation of drainage markers is optional and must be marked using standards from the following options:

Type 1: The Type 1 marker is a green thermoplastic tape installed along the inlet edge of the pavement for quick identification of the culvert.

The Type 2 marker is a white background non-reflective aluminum paddle with black lettering that is mounted to a steel post or attached to a permanent feature. The paddle is marked with the facility’s drainage ID (DFI), mile point, and a green strip near the top.
