WILLAMETTE RIVER BRIDGES OF PORTLAND, OREGON
HISTORIC AMERICAN ENGINEERING RECORD (HAER)
DOCUMENTATION STUDY, SUMMER 1999
Welcome to the Portland Bridges page, presented by Environmental Services, Oregon Department of Transportation. The bridges of Portland, Oregon are numerous and diverse. The structures, ranging in age from 27 years to 90 years of age, represent a variety of construction types including vertical lift spans, double-leaf Bascule drawspans, and the longest tied arch span in the world.
During the Summer of 1999, the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER), and the Oregon Department of Transportation worked on a collaborative project to document the eleven Willamette River Bridges of Portland, OR. Architects, architecture students, historians and photographers were assigned the task of producing measured drawings, written histories, and large-format, Black-and-White photographs of this remarkable collection of bridges. The entire Willamette River Bridges documentation will be placed in the Library of Congress in Washington D.C., accessible to the public. The HAER Project team included Christine Theodoropoulus, Architectural Supervisor; Sharon Wood Wortman, Historian; Judith McGaw, Historian; Linda Dodds, Historian; Joseph Boquiren, Architect; Eric Kenyon, Architect; Manuel Hernandez, Architect; Nicholas Zydycrn, Architect; Shannon Sardell, Architect; and James Norman, Project Photographer. Leslie Schwab served as Assistant Project Photographer.
