NGS - Oregon State Advisor
About the Program

The State Geodetic Advisor program is designed to assist Federal, state, and local government agencies, academia, and the private sector in training, procedures and best practices for using the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS).  The NSRS is the foundation for position, height, distance, gravity, and shoreline for the United States and it territories.  States that follow the recommended guidelines and procedures can achieve the most reliably accurate local positions (latitude, longitude, and height) while complying with nationally recognized standards and specifications for geo-referenced data.

The Oregon State Advisor position is partially funded by ODOT to help guide, assist, and support the states geodetic programs including:
  • Height Modernization
  • Remote Sensing
  • GIS Land Information Systems
  • Coastal Mapping
  • Habitat Restoration
  • Gravity
  • Geodetic Control

The Oregon Department of Transportation, Geometronics Unit real-time network management team has established best practices that specify that the ORGN coordinate system be aligned with the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS). Mark Armstrong tested the preliminary NGS Multi-Year CORS Solution positions available for Oregon to see how well they fit together within themselves and in comparison to current coordinates. A report on the results of this test is available in the pdf below. The goal of the test was to provide insight into future NAD 83(2011)Epoch 2010 positions when the MYCS is implemented through NGS products and services scheduled for the summer of 2011.
