Adoptee Provides
Other than your time and energy the adoptee is responsible for supplying the following items while working on your adopted stretch of highway.
First aid kit
Drinking water
Sturdy leather shoes or boots
Gloves
Long sleeves
Appropriate clothes for season
ODOT Provides
ODOT wants to recognize your effort as well as keep our adoptee safe. ODOT is responsible for providing the following.
Permanent acknowledgment signs
Portable signs
Safety vests
Safety training
Litter bags and ties
Flags
Disposal of litter
Safety
ODOT wants to you to be safe while participating in the Adopt-A-Highway Program.
Here are some safety tips we ask adoptees to follow when caring for our highways.
Do not work in ice, snow or fog.
Face oncoming traffic except on freeways.
Work one side of the highway at a time.
Do not cross the travel sections of the highway.
Pickup on right-of-way only.
Flag syringes and hazardous materials (do not pick up!).
Place filled bags off the shoulder of the road.
Stay clear of construction.
Avoid poison oak/ivy and other noxious weeds.
Avoid overexertion.
Vehicle Use
Our adoptees drive to the adopted site. In order to protect the public and our adoptees, we ask that the following rules are observed when using a vehicle.
Carpool to site.
Park off the roadway.
Park off the shoulders.
Horseplay is forbidden.
Requirements
In order to participate in the Adopt-A-Highway Program we have a few requirements you must be able to meet.
Age 16 or older.
Able to make a 1, 2 or 3-year commitment.
Able to pick up when necessary.
Able to attend 2 safety meetings a year.
