Holm II has teamed with CH2M HILL to work on OTIA projects.
On bridge program, Holm II Inc. partners and prospers

As ODOT’s OTIA III State Bridge Delivery Program brings work to Oregon firms, it is fostering healthy and profitable partnerships. Holm II Inc., a construction firm in Stayton, formed a partnership in 2003 with CH2M HILL, a design firm also looking to work on the bridge program. They joined forces to bid on design-build projects, in which a single contract is awarded for both design and construction.

As a team, the two companies could compete more effectively together than they could have apart. They won contracts for three projects in the Interstate 5 corridor and one in the I-84 corridor. Holm II’s business took off, and owners Dennis and Linda Holm haven’t looked back.

“We’ve grown like crazy the past couple of years,” said Linda Holm. “In terms of volume, our work has doubled, and we’ve added about 20 employees.”

Success with CH2M HILL on bridge program projects such as Sutherlin to Roseburg, Clarks Branch to Tunnel Mill Race, Lower Perry Interchange and Coast Fork to Willamette has allowed Holm II to grow steadily and invest in full-time employees.

As the company continues to grow, Holm II looks for opportunities to diversify its workforce and continue its commitment to its employees.

“If we can find women willing to go to work in the field, we will hire them,” Linda said. “We had a female carpenter who worked for us years ago, and now her daughter works for us.”

The economic benefits of the bridge program spread much further than providing jobs to new employees. Through Holm II’s contracts with ODOT, other businesses will prosper as well.

“We’re strengthening Oregon’s bridges by making them safer, and we’re helping the economy grow by working with local businesses,” said Craig Gries, Holm II’s OTIA III project manager. “Of course, the bridge program brings business to contractors like us, but it’s good for everyone—concrete and steel suppliers, and lumber and gravel yards, too.”
