A massive debris flow and sudden changes to the paths of several rivers on the east side of Mt. Hood severely damaged Highway 35 on Nov. 6 and 7, 2006.
The washed away sections of the highway have been rebuilt. The road reopened earlier than expected on Dec. 8.

| Background |
|
| The Event |
On Nov. 6 and 7 more than 2 million cubic yards of mud, boulders and trees came down Mt. Hood and washed out, undercut and covered about 2.5 miles of Highway 35. The highway was closed from the Highway 35/U.S. 26 junction to Baseline Road. |
| Impact |
The White River dug a new channel through the road, completely burying the old channel (both over and under the White river Bridge) in mud and boulders. Washouts and undercuts occurred at Clark and Newton Creeks and along the East Fork of the Hood River. |
What's Been Done
|
The Oregon Department of Transportation's contractor, Tri-State Construction Inc., worked 12-hour days to rebuild the 2.5-mile section of Highway 35 that was completely washed out. Construction highlights include: 50 dump trucks operating in the construction zone; more than 50 excavators, bulldozers, loaders and other equipment; the movement of more than 400,000 cubic yards of material in the first couple of weeks of the project alone.
|
| Road Status |
Highway 35 reopened Friday, Dec. 8 at 4 p.m. |
|
| What's Next |
|
ODOT and contractor Tri-State Construction Inc. will continue to have a big presence on Highway 35 in the White River slide area during the coming months. Crews will be working off the road, shoring up the White River channel and doing other repair work in the area. This work should not affect traffic on Highway 35.
** Please continue to check this Web site for updates on the project.
