WHAT'S NEW **The four full directional weekend closures have been completed. Thanks to all motorists for being patient during the weekend closures. Lighting and other project elements still need to be completed. However, the contractor will use nighttime lane closures to finish this work by the end of 2009.**

LOCATION AND OVERVIEW This project is paving Interstate 405 from the Marquam Bridge, mile post 0.38, to the Fremont Bridge, mile post 2.59 (the bridges themselves are not part of this paving project). Rutted pavement will be filled to surface grade and then paved to improve the safety of the highway. The concrete median area that is currently open will be backfilled with rock and capped with concrete. Pavement grinding will occur under four over-crossings of the freeway to maintain federal clearance requirements. New lighting and signs along the I-405 corridor also will be installed as part of this project.
PROJECT BENEFITS
The pavement of I-405 in the project area is rutted in all lanes, causing safety hazards. Traffic volumes on I-405 range from 83,000 to 125,000 vehicles per day, making it one of the busiest sections of freeway in the Portland metro area. The freeway serves as a major interstate freight and commuter route. It also is a primary detour route when Interstate 5 through the city is affected by maintenance work or crash-related congestion. New pavement will improve safety, reduce wear on vehicles, improve signing and lighting, and provide a smooth surface for auto and truck traffic.
TRAFFIC IMPACTS The high traffic volumes on I-405 require that lanes be open during weekday daytime hours. Closing lanes would cause significant backups on I-405, I-5 and local streets. Therefore, four weekends of full directional (north or south) closures will be required for the grinding and overlay paving work. Ramp paving will primarily take place during the weekend closures. However, weeknight lane and ramp closures also will be used during the duration of the project. Several tunnels also will be closed during nighttime hours so work crews can update lighting.
Scheduled Weekend Closures (weather dependent)
Full directional closures (either I-405 NORTH or I-405 SOUTH) will begin at 10 p.m. on the Friday prior to the weekends listed below and end by 5 a.m. on the Monday immediately following the weekend. When one direction of I-405 is closed, the other direction will remain open. Here is the tentative schedule for the I-405 closures, subject to change:
August 15-16
|
All I-405 SOUTH lanes and ramps will be closed
|
DONE! |
August 22-23
|
All I-405 NORTH lanes and ramps will be closed
|
DONE! |
August 29-30
|
All I-405 SOUTH lanes and ramps will be closed
|
DONE! |
September 12-13
|
All I-405 NORTH lanes and ramps will be closed
|

DETOURS DURING I-405 NORTH/SOUTH CLOSURES During the I-405 north or south weekend closures indicated in the chart above, motorists should use I-5 as the primary detour route. So, for example, when I-405 north is closed on the two weekends listed above, motorists can travel on I-5 north to their destination. During the weekends of the full directional closures, there will always be one direction of I-405 open and both directions of I-5 open for travel.

**The contractor is scheduled to complete the paving, signing and lighting project by the end of 2009. While the weekend full closures are finished, motorists should expect nighttime lane closures and daytime shoulder closures while the contractor finishes all elements of this project.**

NOISE IMPACTS The city of Portland has granted ODOT a noise permit for work on the I-405 paving project. The noise permit limits work that can take place during nighttime hours. Work taking place at night will include paving operations, which typically move along the highway at 5mph.
A 24-hour noise hotline will be set up during construction work should any noise concerns arise. This number will be published once the project begins.

| Project Schedule |

Work on the I-405 paving project is expected to begin in June and be completed by the end of the year.
During July, August and September, there will be a total of 4 weekend single-directional closures of I-405. Northbound I-405 will be completely closed on two weekends during this period; southbound I-405 also will be completely closed during two weekends during this period. ODOT will update the public on the weekend closure dates when they become available.
Three tunnels will be closed during nighttime work hours for approximately a week during the project. They are the Taylor Street and Everett Street on-ramps to southbound I-405, and the U.S. 26 (Sunset Highway) to northbound I-405 ramp. The tunnels will receive new lighting during the closures.
