The I-84: Multnomah Falls to Cascade Locks project will grind out existing pavement and add a new four-inch in-lay across the project area. Several off/on-ramps to I-84 also will be paved along the corridor. New guardrail and median barrier also will be added as part of the project.
This 14-mile project begins at mile post 31.8, just east of Multnomah Falls, and ends at mile post 46.1, east of Cascade Locks.

Project Need
The surface area of I-84 in the project area is in need of repairs. Several areas have been temporarily patched. Interchange ramps, crossing roadways and frontage roads also are in need of improvement. This is a major national route for east-west interstate traffic. The current average daily traffic volume is 20,800 vehicles.
Construction Impacts Due to high vehicle volumes, work requiring lane closures on the highway are expected to be done primarily during nighttime hours. However, it is expected that there will be periods when only one travel lane will be provided in each direction. In addition, due to the paving and barrier work, it will be necessary to move traffic to the shoulders during some stages of the project. During some paving operations, it will be necessary to close ramp access to and from I-84. Detours will be in place during the temporary ramp closures, which are only expected to last a night or two at a time.
Project Timeline
Construction on the I-84: Multnomah Falls to Cascade Locks project is scheduled to begin in August 2009. Work is expected to be completed in October 2010.
