Contractors for the Oregon Department of Transportation have completed a project to construct a permanent retaining wall along the southbound lane of OR 224 at milepost 46.2. The structure will support the road in this landslide zone and is designed to stabilize the roadway. The project was necessary as underground surveys have identified a landslide area that extends roughly 300 feet along the highway and significant cracking that worsened in recent years. Engineers indicate that there is a risk that the existing instability of the site could extend east of this immediate area and damage a much larger portion of the roadway surface of OR 224.
The work began November 2008 and completed April 2009.
