I-84 Construction: Hood River Rockfall Repair
Hood River Rockfall Repair

In February 2014, a large rockfall event occurred near Hood River on Interstate 84 (at milepost 61.2). Rockfall material blocked the eastbound travel lanes and the lanes were closed for five days while crews removed material from the roadway and performed slope scaling. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is working on a project to reduce the potential for future large scale rockfall events in this area, making I-84 safer for all travelers. The project will improve slope stability and provide a vegetated roadside barrier to reduce the potential for rockfall material entering the highway.

Here is what that means to your travel plans! Travelers should be aware of potential traffic impacts and plan their trips accordingly. Visit TripCheck.com for current traffic conditions or sign up for construction update email around the region.

2016 Construction*

What? Repair a hillside to the south of I-84 near Hood River (milepost 61.2) to improve safety for travelers by reducing the potential for future large scale rockfall events in the area. Construction will require a single lane closure on eastbound I-84 for about three months, to ensure traveler safety.
When? Construction started in early September 2016 and will continue through May 2017.Additional lane closures may take place through May 2017.

Construction update (01/13/17): Between January and early April, all lanes will be open. In early April 2017, crews will return to add seed to the gabion wire basket barrier that is along the highway (and prevents rocks from falling into the highway).

Bicyclists will travel on the highway shoulder in the area. Additional lane/shoulder closures will be needed to finish the project.
