Region 1 Rumble Strip Installations

Overview

ODOT will install rumble strips in the centerline and shoulder of several highway segments in the Portland Metro region (Region 1), as well as reflective pavement markers. This is a joint effort with the Federal Highway Administration to reduce the number of fatal and serious injury crashes.

Why is ODOT building this project?

Rumble strips are an effective countermeasure for reducing crashes where drivers cross the center line or run off the road. This relatively low cost engineering treatment alerts drivers of a lane departure through vibration and noise created when a vehicle’s tires contact the rumble strip. In Oregon, about 66% of fatal crashes are a result of a vehicle leaving its lane (either crossing the centerline or going off the shoulder).

Rumble strips are grooves or rows of indents in the pavement that cause a vibration and audible rumbling, transmitted through the wheels into the car body. Rumble strips are used to grab a driver’s attention through vibration and noise to alert them that they are leaving the travel lane. The project will install rumble strips in the centerline and on the shoulder for several highway segments. 

Centerline Rumble Strips − reduce head-on, opposite direction side-swipe, and run-off-the-road left crashes. Primarily placed near (or on) the centerline of the roadway to separate opposing traffic on undivided highways. 

Shoulder Rumble Strips − reduce run-off-the-road crashes. These are shoulder installed, placed adjacent to the edge of the travel lane or placed at the edge of the travel lane within the pavement marking, improving the visibility of the marking. Shoulder Rumble Strips can be installed with gaps so that bicyclists can more easily travel across to the shoulder. Both types of rumble strips may also have gaps at intersections, interchanges, and sometimes across bridges.

​What are the construction impacts?

Current construction impacts (2016): 
Expect lane and shoulder closures with up to 20-minute delays on small sections of the following highways from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.* Get weekly construction details for the highways that are of interest to you (rumble strips and/or reflective pavement markers will be installed on I-5, I-84, US 26, OR 35, OR 213, OR 219, OR 211, OR 224, OR 281, and OR 282)
* The construction schedule is dependent on weather and site conditions. ​

Travelers: 
Access to highways will not be affected; however, travelers should anticipate temporary lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic and pilot cars, creating up to 20 minute delays at the work site after 7 p.m. in the evenings.

Shoulder rumble strips will only be added where there is enough room for bicyclists to travel safely. However, cyclists should be aware of the construction crews while the rumble strips are being installed. The shoulder rumble strips will use a "gap pattern" which allows bicyclists to more easily travel across the fog (white) line; with gaps every 30 feet.

Residents/businesses: 
Construction will result in periodic, localized noise as the rumble strips are ground into the pavement by machinery. The work will take place in a moving operation, with the crews traveling down the highway at about 4 mph and temporary lane closures taking place only where crews are working. 

Once installed, the centerline rumble strips are not expected to generate sound levels loud enough to greatly disturb nearby residences. Studies have documented that rumble strips create about the same noise level 50 feet away as a garbage disposal, and a slightly higher noise level than a vacuum cleaner 100 feet away.
