Bridge Deck Overlays

(August 16, 2016)

Bridge Deck Overlays: I-5 northbound to OR 217 northbound and OR 99W over OR 217

This project was completed in October 2016.

Two bridges are slated for bridge deck overlays in summer 2016:  the bridge from I-5 northbound to Oregon Highway 217 northbound and the bridge on Oregon Highway 99W over Oregon Highway 217. A bridge deck overlay preserves the bridges’ lifespans by preventing water intrusion in the existing cracks. Work began in July 2016 and was complete October 2016.

I-5 northbound to OR 217 northbound bridge (work is complete)

I-5=2172.PNGWhy is ODOT doing this work?
The new overlay is routine maintenance for the ramp, which hasn’t had a new permanent surface since it opened in 2001. The ramp provides a busy transition from Interstate 5 to OR 217, with an average daily traffic flow in 2014 of 34,900 vehicles.

What is the new overlay?
The new surface will be a polyester polymer concrete overlay (PPC). This type of concrete overlay has a shorter curing time than other types of concrete overlays, in turn reducing the length of time the bridge has to be closed.

What overlay was applied in 2014?
The 2014 overlay was a polymer epoxy and was intended to last only two years.

What are the traffic impacts?
The majority of the work is scheduled to take place from 9 p.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday on four consecutive weekends in late July and early August, starting Saturday July 30 and continuing on Saturday Aug. 6, Saturday Aug. 13 and Saturday, Aug. 20. The bridge will be completely closed during the 32-hour closure window. In addition, there will be intermittent nighttime lane closures and nighttime full closures on the bridge. Weather and other unexpected events could change the schedule.

What is the detour when the bridge is closed?
When the ramp is closed, travelers will be directed to use exit 292B (Kruse Way/72nd Avenue), the next exit north, and then turn right at the traffic signal onto OR 217. See the detour map.

OR 99W over OR 217 (work is complete)

Why is ODOT doing this work?

The OR 99W bridge over OR217 on I-5 has significant cracking allowing water to seep through, which could cause damage to the concrete and steel reinforcement.  A contractor will apply an MPCO (Multi-Layer Polymer Concrete) overlay to the bridge deck to prevent damage and preserve the surface.

What are the traffic impacts?
The majority of the work on this bridge was completed Aug. 11 - 14.  There will be intermittent nighttime lane closures while the contractor wraps up the work and applies final striping. The ramps to/from OR 217 will remain open during the work, and those traveling by bicycle will be flagged through the work area along with motor vehicles.

Lane closures on the bridge and intersections Thursday, Sept. 8 from 10 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
