Camelot to Sylvan Interchange Phase 3

Project Summary:This is Phase 3 of the Camelot to Sylvan Interchange project that includes paving three lanes in each direction on U.S. 26 from Highway 217 to the Camelot Court overpass and replacing the Canyon Road overpass bridge with a wider structure.  A bicycle/pedestrian path is also being constructed along the south side of U.S. 26.
Status and Timeline:Construction began summer 2003; construction is substantially complete
Latest Information: Work is substantially complete on this project.  There may be intermittent shoulder closures in the project area as the contractor completes cleanup work.  Work is continuing on the U.S. 26: Cornell to OR 217 widening project.

Camelot to Sylvan Interchange
Traffic today is at capacity on U.S. 26 (Sunset Highway) and Oregon Highway 217 and the congestion is projected to increase in the coming years. Substandard ramp design and locations cause queuing and weaving problems. This leads to congestion and an unacceptable level of service on these freeways.
This project is the third and final phase of a three-phase modernization project to improve the section of U.S. 26 between the Camelot overpass (near the cemetery) and the Sylvan interchange. It is being constructed in three phases to optimize available funding over several years. 
The first two phases provided the necessary conditions for the third phase by: 
  • Moving parallel local streets which were in close proximity further away from the Sunset Highway.
  • Removing and replacing the existing over-crossings (Camelot Court and Sylvan bridges) with longer structures.
  • Construction of retaining walls and sound walls.
  • Construction of collector-distributor roads in combination with revised exit and entrance ramps.
The additions to the collector-distributor roads and the ramp revisions did much to relieve the queuing and weaving problems. The addition of the third lane in each direction will balance capacity.  The construction of the Highway 217 to Camelot interchange section will complete the six lane section of Sunset Highway between the Vista Ridge Tunnel and Highway 217. This will reduce the infamous backups currently experienced on this highway during much of the day.
 
Phase 3
Replacing the bridge over the Canyon Road westbound exit ramp is a major feature of Phase 3, in addition to the paving work. The project incorporates widening eastbound U.S. 26 from Highway 217 to the Camelot overpass, a project funded by the Oregon Transportation Investment Act. Phase 3 is funded by the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program.
The removal and reconstruction of the U.S. 26 over-crossing of the Canyon Road westbound exit ramp will increase the vertical clearance between the exit pavement and the bottom of the structure to 5.2 meters (17´), which is the ODOT minimum standard for highway construction.  The structure and traffic configuration was completed October 2004.
 
Westside Corridor Projects
The Camelot to Sylvan project is part of the overall Westside Corridor plan, a multi-modal project done in partnership with TriMet, the City of Portland, Multnomah and Washington counties. A major component of the Westside Corridor plan is the TriMet West Side MAX Light Rail line.
Segments of a multi-use path have been incorporated into each phase of the Camelot to Sylvan project. When the Westside Corridor projects are completed, a continuous pathway for pedestrians, bicycles and wheelchairs will extend from Portland to the Sunset Transit Center. Automobiles, trucks and buses will travel on the improved and safer Sunset Highway and local street system. Pedestrians, bicyclists, and commuters can travel  west from Portland via the Westside MAX as well.
The goals of the Westside Corridor plan are to:
  • Balance capacity in the corridor by widening the Sunset Highway to six lanes
  • Improve safety by removing merge weave movements between interchanges that are spaced too closely
  • Improve operations at ramp terminals and arterials by improving signal timing
  • Install pedestrian and bicycle facilities
