Project Information
A $5.6 million paving project began April 2009 on U.S. 26 (Sunset Highway) to repave the highway from 185th Avenue to North Plains (Glencoe Road).  Project elements include:

* Grinding and inlaying new asphalt on the highway and all of the on- and off-ramps in the project area (Note: U.S. 26 was paved in the vicinity of Jackson School Rd. in 2005 as part of the interchange project and will not be repaved as part of this project.)

* Adding cable barrier in the center median of U.S. 26 across the whole project area

* Repairing guardrail in select areas including on the Rock Creek and McKay Creek bridges

* Adding durable reflective striping

* Upgrading highway signs

* Replacing one culvert

* Constructing ADA ramps at the terminus of select ramps

* Paving many of the ramp interchanges

The project should be completed by November 2009.

American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA)
The U.S. 26 Preservation Project uses federal stimulus funds – the first Oregon highway project to be funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.  Approximately 20% of the $5.6 million project is funded by ARRA.

Traffic Impacts
Project construction will create congestion and delays throughout the summer and fall on U.S. 26 and on intersecting local streets.  Due to the high traffic volumes on U.S. 26, it is required that all lanes be open without restrictions during daytime hours.  Closing the lanes during the day would create backups and serious safety concerns.  Due to this restriction, traffic impacts and most work will be conducted during overnight hours.  In general, work hours will be Monday through Friday nights, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., with the exception of the weekend closures (see below).  Highway lanes and on- and off-ramps will be temporarily closed during nighttime hours.  Daytime work will occur intermittently but will not impact traffic.

Ramp closures
As part of this project, full ramp closures will be required during nighttime work hours.  This includes the 185th Ave. ramps, Cornelius Pass ramps, Helvetia Rd. ramps, and Glencoe Rd. ramps.  These closures will occur intermittently throughout the project’s duration.  Signage will warn motorists in advance of the closures.

Motorists are reminded that traffic fines are double in a construction zone.  Please drive safely.

Traffic impacts are detailed in the weekly construction news, posted every Friday.

Nighttime Noise
Nighttime construction noise may be audible to residents living along the project corridor.  However, noise levels dissipate quickly as distance from the source increases.  The paving operation is continually moving which means that noise will not be concentrated in one particular area for any significant length of time.
