| Project Description |

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has begun a project to remove and replace a retaining wall on U.S. 30 (Lower Columbia River Highway) just east of the City of Rainier. U.S. 30 is a critical regional freight route that connects communities on the coast and along the lower Columbia with the Willamette Valley. The highway in this section follows a steep hillside overlooking the Columbia River.
At milepost 46.5, the highway is supported by a 1930’s era stone masonry retaining wall and a concrete wall totaling approximately 150 feet in length. The retaining wall at this location has had a history of repairs, and now needs to be removed and replaced with a wall meeting modern engineering standards. The project will remove the existing structures and replace them with a soldier pile tie-back wall and will rebuild the short section of roadway above the new wall.
Construction began September 2009 and will take approximately two months to complete. During construction, the highway traffic will be reduced to one lane with 24-hour flagging.
Read the weekly construction news, a report that details the traffic impacts on the project on a weekly basis, updated every Friday.
