The Oregon Department of Transportation and the City of Portland have teamed together on the Urban ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) Corridor Project. The project aims to improve safety and traffic mobility along Interstate 205, SE 82nd Avenue (Highway 213), SE Powell Boulevard (U.S. 26) and SE Foster Road.

The project includes the installation of 10 new variable message signs (VMS). These message signs will be used to alert drivers to traffic incidents and other occurrences by providing real-time traffic information from local Traffic Management Operation Centers. This traveler information will allow drivers to better plan their travel routes and detour around areas experiencing greater traffic delay. In particular, it will benefit motorists within the I-205 and SE 82nd Avenue parallel route corridors where the message signs can be used to direct drivers to detour between these routes during incidents.
The 10 signs are being installed at the following locations (see below for map with sites):
- Northbound on 82nd Ave. near NE Killingsworth Street (M.P. 0.32, location #3 on map)
- Southbound on 82nd Ave. near NE Glisan Street (M.P. 2.64, location #5 on map)
- Westbound on NE Glisan Street near 82nd Ave. (approximately 500 feet east of 82nd Ave. M.P. 2.75, location #6 on map)
- Eastbound on SE Powell Boulevard near SE Foster Road (M.P. 3.36, location #7 on map)
- Northbound on 82nd Ave. near SE Powell Boulevard (M.P. 4.92, location #8 on map)
- Southbound on 82nd Ave. near SE Powell Boulevard (M.P. 5.58, location #9 on map)
- Eastbound on SE Powell Boulevard near 82nd Ave. (M.P. 4.8, location #10 on map)
- Westbound on SE Powell Boulevard near SE Milwaukie Avenue (M.P. 1.43, location #12 on map)
- Westbound on SE Foster Road near 82nd Ave. (M.P. 5.76, location #14 on map)
- Westbound on NE Killingsworth Street near NE 82nd Avenue (M.P. 0.53, location #18 on map)
All of the message signs will be mounted on a cantilever type support. Each sign is approximately 8-feet wide by 5-feet high. They will be mounted so that the bottom of each sign is about 18 feet above the ground. A contractor will install all VMS except for the one on westbound SE Powell Boulevard near 82nd Ave., which is to be installed by the City of Portland.

| Traffic Impacts |
|
The contractor on the Urban ITS project will be workng at the 10 message sign sites at several different times during the next year. It's expected that the contractor will work at one location at a time, with single-lane closures expected during daytime hours.
