TV Highway @ 178th Avenue Safety Project
Project Information
A contractor for ODOT completed work in April 2012 on an important safety project on TV Highway (OR 8) at SW 178th Avenue in Aloha.  This unsignalized intersection had seen a number of pedestrians struck and vehicles rear-ended.  Bus stops and a convenience store contributed to steady foot traffic crossing the highway.    The project installed a traffic signal at the intersection.  Installing a full traffic signal should help make the intersection more safe.
In 2010, ODOT installed a Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacon adjacent to the highway lanes in an effort to help alert drivers when pedestrians are ready to cross. The beacon was activated 500-700 times a day over the past year.  It helped reduce crashes but the new signal should further increase safety.  The Rapid Flash Beacon was moved to another state highway after the new signal was installed.
The project elements included:
* Adding a traffic signal at the intersection of TV Highway and 178th Avenue.  This includes  pedestrian countdown signals and a dedicated left-turn arrow for eastbound motorists turning onto 178th Avenue.
* Adding an additional marked crosswalk on the east side of the intersection;  both sides of the intersection now have marked crosswalks
* Adding new ADA ramps to the sidewalks on all intersection corners
* Interconnecting the new signal with other traffic signals on TV Highway for more efficient travel in the corridor
* In conjunction with this project, TriMet relocated the TV Highway eastbound bus stop slightly to the west so it's no longer in the middle of the intersection
Work on this project is complete.
