Work was completed in fall 2012 to extend the fourth lane of I-5 southbound that previously tapered off just south of the Carman Drive off-ramp in Tigard. This project lengthened the lane through the Carman Drive interchange and connected it with the existing exit-only lane for Lower Boones Ferry Road. There are now four lanes on I-5 southbound between Carman Drive and Lower Boones Ferry Road. There was considerable congestion and vehicle weaving in this section of I-5, especially during afternoon commute hours. Traffic should flow smoother and there should be a reduction of rear end crashes with the new lane. The Carman Drive/Upper Boones Ferry on-ramp to I-5 southbound was shifted slightly to the east to better align with the new lane. Motorists using this on-ramp are now required to merge onto the exit-only lane for Lower Boones Ferry Road. Motorists continuing south on I-5 past the Lower Boones Ferry Road off-ramp are required to merge left across two lanes.
