As part of the effort to rebuild Vernonia schools after the 2007 flood, ODOT made improvements to OR 47/Bridge Street spanning Missouri Avenue and Texas Avenue. This is adjacent to the location of the new K-12 school. These improvements focused on creating a safe connection between Bridge Street and Missouri Avenue for all users: pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists. Construction began in May 2012 and was complete in time for the school grand opening in August 2012. The contractor was Eagle-Elsner, Inc. Project elements included:
- OR 47/Bridge Street was widened with a dedicated left turn lane for motorists turning onto Missouri Avenue
- A new marked crosswalk was built at Missouri Avenue for pedestrians crossing OR 47/Bridge Street. The new crosswalk includes a Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacon (RRFB). An RRFB displays bright, yellow flashing lights designed to be visible to approaching motorists when pedestrians press a signed roadside button. This alerts drivers that pedestrians are ready to use the crosswalk and to remind drivers that they are responsible for stopping to allow pedestrians to cross.
- The marked crosswalk at Texas Avenue was removed to encourage use of the new safer crossing at Missouri Avenue
- Sidewalks were widened, including one section on the south side of OR 47/Bridge Street that is now 10 feet wide.
- Construction work also included rebuilding Missouri Avenue, as the main access to the new school
