Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) Urban Signals Project

Project Overview:

To reduce crashes at busy intersections, the Oregon Department of Transportation is improving traffic signals on several busy roadways in Gresham, Beaverton and Hillsboro. The project will upgrade existing signal equipment, install advanced signing and evaluate lighting to improve safety. Improvements will include:
** Reflective signal back plates that will improve visibility for drivers
** Lighting upgrades at select locations that will improve visibility for all users
** Count-down crosswalk signals that will allow pedestrians to know when it is safe to walk
** Flashing left arrows that will help drivers know left turns are permitted after yielding to pedestrians and oncoming traffic

These improvements are part of the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), a federally funded program to reduce traffic injuries and fatalities. Construction is expected to start January 2017 and extend through 2017.

Why this project is needed:

Fatal and serious injury collisions affect the lives of many Oregonians every year. ODOT has identified six traffic corridors in the region that have the highest potential to increase safety with these types of improvements. Signal upgrades at intersections along these roads will reduce collisions and provide better safety.

** NW Evergreen Parkway: Town Center Drive to Brookwood Parkway (Hillsboro)
** SW Murray Boulevard: Butner Road to Scholls Ferry Road (Beaverton)
** SW Scholls Ferry Road: Hwy 10 to SW 175th Avenue (Washington County)
** SW Cedar Hills Boulevard: Barnes Road to Farmington Road (Beaverton)
** Division Street: 182nd to Kane Drive (Gresham)
** NE 181st Avenue: Sandy Boulevard to Stark Street (Gresham)

Potential construction impacts:

** Shoulder and lane closures during traffic signal upgrades
** Possible short-term driveway closures (driveways directly adjacent to intersections only)
** Possible short-term crosswalk closures during pedestrian signal upgrades
