Interstate 84: Troutdale Interchange (Exit 17)
Project Information
The Interstate 84: Troutdale Interchange (Exit 17) improvement project began work in July 2009. The contractor on the $1.3 million project to add a turn lane and sign bridge on South Frontage Road is Coral Construction of Wilsonville, Ore. The project will be completed by summer 2010.

The project, which is being funded by the Oregon Department of Transportation, Port of Portland, City of Troutdale and federal stimulus funds, will add an additional turn lane for traffic headed east on South Frontage Road to 257th Drive/NW Graham Road (Interstate 84, exit 17).

Following completion of the project, South Frontage Road will be widened with two dedicated right-turn lanes, one dedicated left-turn lane and one through/left-turn lane. A sign bridge will be installed on South Frontage Road to direct motorists to their proper lane.

Traffic Impacts
Most of the road widening work required to accommodate the extra lane will take place to the north side of South Frontage Road during daytime work hours. Due to high traffic volumes on South Frontage Road, lane closures will only be allowed between 7 p.m. and 10 a.m. on weekdays and 5 p.m. to 10 a.m. on weekends. Motorists should also expect lane closures on 257th Drive/Graham Road during off-peak travel times. Paving operations will require short-term driveway closures on South Frontage Road. A curbside bike lane will be maintained during construction. I-84 will not be impacted by the work.

Project Funding
This project is being partly funded by ODOT, the Port of Portland and the City of Troutdale. It also uses $700,000 in federal stimulus funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Coral Construction of Wilsonville, Ore., is the contractor on the $1.3 million construction project.

Long-Term Project
A second longer-range project is looking to widen Marine Drive under I-84 to accommodate two-way traffic, and to extend Marine Drive to the south and east to connect with 257th Avenue. This connection, also referred to as a “backage road,” provides an alternative route for southbound traffic exiting from I-84 eastbound, and will accommodate traffic growth that is forecasted in the area over the next 20 years. The Marine Drive widening and extension project has been included in local and regional transportation plans, but the project is not currently funded for construction.
