Astoria Megler Bridge Painting
Overview
Map
The Astoria Megler bridge is rusting, causing its steel to deteriorate. It needs to be painted to protect the steel from further damage.

The Astoria Megler Bridge was built in 1966. It is a steel continuous truss bridge and is the longest such bridge in North America. Because it is subjected to ocean salt spray, painting is important to keep the steel from degrading. The bridge was last painted in the 1980s.

Oregon and Washington will evenly split the cost of painting the bridge, which is estimated to be about $20 million. The project is scheduled to be offered for bidding in May 2009 with the work beginning in 2009 and ending in 2011.

The project will require single lane closures. To reduce the impact on travelers, such single lane closures may only occur overnight from March through October. It is possible that periodic complete closures will be necessary for a few hours a week. If necessary, total closure would occur overnight and would be advertised in advance via news release, Web, Highway Advisory Radio system and roadside signs or message boards.
