OR126B Springfield Bridge

Overview

The OR 126B:  Willamette River Bridge is located at the west end of Springfield, and is commonly referred to as the Springfield Bridge.

This project will affect only the westbound, historic steel bridge which is Main Street in Springfield.  The eastbound bridge, which is South A Street, will not be affected.

Over the years, corrosion and rust have damaged the steel structural members beneath the bridge.  This project will repair and replace those components, and will rehabilitate the roller bearing assemblies where the bridge connects to the concrete bridge bents, or foundation.

History

The Springfield Bridge was built in 1929 and designed under ODOT’s highly esteemed bridge designer, Conde McCullough.

According to an ODOT publication, Oregon’s Historic Bridge Field Guide,  “In the late 1920s, major technological developments enabled engineers to calculate the loading for continuous frame structures. For bridges, this enabled longer, more graceful spans, both in concrete and steel. Both this bridge and the Scottsburg Bridge demonstrate how this new technology could be applied to steel truss design. Due to its prominent location in Springfield, this bridge includes a number of decorative treatments, including ornate entrance pylons with a bell tower design and a decorative railing.”

Previous projects have raised the portals and added a safety railing (1976), and restored the railings and provided an overlay to the deck (2002).

Construction

Construction will begin in February and continue through June.  The contractor will work a four-day-per-week schedule, Monday through Thursday between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

While much of the work will be done from platforms attached beneath the bridge, pedestrians and bicyclists should expect sidewalk closures, and motorists can expect intermittent lane closures.

There will be three complete, nighttime closures of the bridge during construction.  The current tentative dates for the nighttime complete closures are:

·         Monday, February 24, 2014 at 9 PM until Tuesday, February 25, at 4 AM.
·         Thursday, April 3, 2014 at 9 PM until Friday, April 4, 2014 at 4 AM.
·         Thursday, May 15, 2014 at 9 PM until Friday, May 16, 2014 at 4 AM.

NOTE:  These dates could change.  Updated information will be provided during construction.

When the bridge is closed, motorists trying to access points west of the bridge should take Pioneer Pkwy (OR528) northbound, to OR126 westbound, to I-5 southbound, take Exit 189 to Franklin Blvd (OR225) northbound, to OR126 Business / Main St.

During the closures, bicyclists and pedestrians may have to find an alternate route.

The low-bid contract for this project was awarded to M. J. Hughes Construction of Gresham, Oregon.
