Rebuilding Neahkahnie Mountain rock wall
ODOT seeks additional information about the historic wall for an interpretive display
This summer, the Oregon Department of Transportation will rebuild a historic rock wall on Neahkahnie Mountain. The rock-faced masonry wall spans three quarters of a mile and overlooks a breathtaking ocean expanse along U.S. 101 near Manzanita (mile post 41).
The wall has started leaning away from the hillside, and ODOT crews were forced to build a temporary buttress when one of the wall’s large stones broke loose a few years ago, rolling dangerously close to a residence downhill.
Using a federal Scenic Byways Grant, ODOT will hire contractors to restore the damaged portion of the wall this summer. As part of that project, ODOT would like to include an interpretive panel describing the wall’s history.
Area residents have indicated that the wall was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Core, however, ODOT records indicate that the Highway Department contracted for the work with K.L. Goulter, from Seattle.
ODOT has posted historic photos, documentation and plans on the project Web page. Anyone with additional information (historic photos, documentation or stories) about the wall or its construction is encouraged to contact ODOT’s Sarah Jalving at (503) 986-6926 or Sarah.A.Jalving@odot.state.or.us.
