New left-turn signals coming to McMinnville
First signal will be installed Saturday, April 11

MCMINNVILLE – ODOT will install new left-turn signals on several intersections with Oregon 99W (Pacific Highway West). Crews will replace the existing left-turn signals with a four-section head that includes a flashing left arrow indicating a permissive left turn, which means that drivers are permitted to turn after yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.

Crews will replace the left-turn signals at Oregon 99W and SW Keck Circle on Saturday, April 11, followed by SW Linfield Avenue on April 18, SW Fellows on April 25 and Baker Creek Road on May 2.

Work will begin each Saturday about 7 a.m. and continue until the work is complete, likely between noon and 2 p.m. the same day. Traffic will be controlled by flaggers. Expect less than 20 minute delays or use alternate routes.

“The new flashing yellow arrows will help clarify for left-turning motorists when they must yield,” said ODOT Region 2 Signal Operations Engineer, Craig Black, “Studies have found that some people think green means go no matter what shape the green signal light is. The new display arrows should clarify when a motorist needs to yield and are designed to make intersections safer and more efficient.”

The new signals were part of a Federal Highway Administration nationwide review of left-turn signal standards, and the signals have since received interim federal approval. The Oregon Department of Transportation has since adopted this signal type as the new standard for “protected/permissive left turn phasing.”
