ODOT approves temporary speed reduction to lessen bridge deck damage
On July 2, ODOT approved a temporary speed reduction to 25 mph over the Old Young’s Bay Bridge on U.S. 101 Business. Crews will install new speed limit signs, and the limit will remain in place until fall, when ODOT can replace the failing fiber-reinforced polymer deck surface.
According to ODOT Structural Bridge Engineer Steve Lovejoy, the excessive flex in the deck surface had significantly worsened since the last inspection. “The lower speed limit will reduce the impact to the deteriorating polymer surface and the bridge structure,” said Lovejoy, who will design the replacement deck. “We may use a steel grated surface similar to what you would find on the Willuski Bridge on Oregon 202 or the Steel Bridge in Portland.”
In 2002, the bridge decking was replaced as using a newer fiber-reinforced polymer technology. The material is cracking and failing. Until the deck can be replaced this fall, slower traffic will lessen the forces transmitted to the bridge’s surface and structure
