Saginaw Road overpass remains closed for construction

COTTAGE GROVE — The Saginaw Road overpass at Interstate 5 north of Cottage Grove will remain closed until Aug. 21 while a new bridge is constructed.

During the overpass closure, drivers on I-5 may access Saginaw Road from the following detours:
  • Northbound I-5 traffic heading west of the freeway at Saginaw Road:  Use the I-5 Creswell exit 182 to Highway 99.
  • Southbound I-5 traffic heading east of the freeway at Saginaw Road:  Use the East Cottage Grove Connector exit 174.
The old Saginaw Road overpass at I-5 has a vertical clearance of 14 feet, 7 inches, which requires over-height loads to detour around the structure. At least twice a year, drivers of tall loads forget to bypass the structure and strike the overpass. The new overpass will provide vertical clearance of about 17 feet.

This work is part of a larger project to replace three bridges between Creswell and Cottage Grove. Construction is scheduled for completion by the end of 2009.  ODOT awarded the $17 million bridge replacement contract to M.J. Hughes Construction Company of Gresham, Ore. It is funded by the Oregon Transportation Investment Act.
