Iraqi engineers to tour ODOT’s US20- Pioneer Mountain to Eddyville project

Lessons learned will help rebuild war-torn Iraq

EDDYVILLE— A group of engineers from 13 Iraqi universities will tour the US20- Pioneer Mountain to Eddyville (PME) construction site Saturday, August 8, as part of a program to help the engineers rebuild their war-torn nation.

The engineers’ visit is sponsored by the OSU School of Civil and Construction Engineering.

“We are honored that the engineers and OSU have included this project among those the Iraqi engineers will visit,” said Joe Squire, the PME project manager.  “We are proud to display the project’s approach to geological and environmental challenges as well as the high level engineering and construction methods we’re using,” he said.

The US20-Pioneer Mountain to Eddyville project is the largest road construction project underway in Oregon.  With a construction budget of $190-million, the project will make travel along a deadly section of Highway 20 safer by building a 6.5 mile long road that will eliminate many hairpin turns, increase visibility for motorists and ease congestion by providing more lanes of travel.  The project will also construct 8 bridges with the strongest seismic standards available, a critical factor considering Highway 20’s seismic lifeline route designation.

The engineers’ tour will begin at 9:45 at the project construction office, 20362 Hwy 20 Eddyville.  Media members who wish to accompany the tour will need boots or substantial closed-toe shoes.  Hard hats, safety vests and protective eyewear will be provided by project officials.
