Second stimulus paving project set to begin on Oregon 22
Oregon Mainline, Inc., will pave on OR 22 from OR 51 to Salem bridges
SALEM – A contractor working for the Oregon Department of Transportation will begin work Sunday, Aug. 23, on a pavement preservation project on Oregon 22 (Willamina-Salem Highway) from its junction with Oregon 51 (Independence Highway) to the Center and Marion Street Bridges in Salem.
Oregon Mainline, Inc., will work nightly from Sunday through Thursday beginning at 7 p.m. and continuing through 6 a.m. the following morning. The contract prohibits work that restricts traffic from Friday at 6 a.m. until Sunday at 7 p.m., however work may take place off the roadway during that time.
The $6.6 million project is funded by the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (www.recovery.gov). Since pavement and striping both require dry, relative warm days in order to allow the materials to set properly, weather could mean that final finishing work is completed in spring 2010. The paving work itself should be completed during this construction season.
This project also includes bridge deck resurfacing just west of the Marion and Center Street Bridges, across from Capitol Manor. ODOT crews had previously cut protruding metal and patched the worn concrete deck surface.
Ongoing work on Oregon 22
Contractors are still wrapping up an ongoing stimulus-funded pavement preservation project on Oregon 22 from its junction with Oregon 18 (Salmon River Highway) to Oregon 99W (Pacific Highway West). Paving is almost complete, with final striping and finishing work expected over the next few weeks.
The photo below shows Oregon 22 just east of Perrydale Road, before and after paving. Striping work will be completed soon.

Understanding the need for pavement preservation
Repairing the significant damage from recent icy winter storms and maintaining pavement conditions overall is important because it prevents each pothole and crack from allowing water to permeate the road surface and expand as it freezes. The worse a road is before a freeze, the greater the damage is from the freeze.
Pavement preservation also saves the wear and tear on vehicles’ suspension and tires.
