| Work to close Beltline ramp to northbound I-5 |
|
| 08/21/2007 |
The Oregon Department of Transportation will close the Beltline Road on-ramp to northbound Interstate 5 in the Gateway area beginning just after midnight on Aug. 27 to realign the ramp and modify the existing I-5 northbound configuration to put traffic onto the new I-5 northbound bridge over Game Farm Road.
The ramp closure will last four days or less. During the closure, construction crews will realign the existing ramp configuration and complete paving activities.
Shutting down the ramp will allow an ODOT contractor to change the I-5 northbound traffic configuration that now takes motorists over a temporary median bridge. Northbound traffic has been using the median bridge since November 2006. The new, permanent alignment will place traffic onto the just-completed I-5 northbound bridge over Game Farm.
ODOT encourages motorists to use alternate routes to access I-5 northbound from the Gateway area during the closure. Interstate 105, south of Beltline, will act as the primary alternative.
A clearly marked detour route will direct traffic to eastbound Beltline, east of Gateway Street, then south on Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, through the two-lane roundabout, to southbound Pioneer Parkway to Q Street. From there, vehicles turn west on Q Street to access westbound I-105 and then I-5 northbound.
Replacement of the northbound and southbound bridges over Game Farm is a small part of the $72.5 million I-5/Beltline Interchange improvement project that will bring the facility, completed
in 1968, up to modern operational and safety standards.
For regular updates on the I-5/Beltline project, go to:
The initial phase of the interchange upgrade project will include: a 2,400-foot-long, two-lane flyover bridge that will carry vehicles traveling north on I-5 over the freeway to the westbound lanes of Beltline – rising 50 feet at its highest point to clear Beltline; replacement of the two I-5 bridges over Game Farm; a new westbound Beltline lane that will stretch from I-5 to the Coburg Road interchange; and a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge over I-5, south of Beltline. Future phases include I-5 sound walls, a new ramp from I-5 southbound to westbound Beltline, and a complete rebuild of the Beltline-Gateway Street intersection.
