Seaside and ODOT to explore exception to highway standards
SEASIDE – The City of Seaside and Oregon Department of Transportation are working together to explore the use of an alternate mobility standard for U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway/North Roosevelt Drive) through Seaside.
In a letter from Seaside’s city council and mayor, councilors stated, “We stand together as the elected officials of Seaside to ask ODOT to work with us in pursuing alternate mobility standards for U.S. 101 that would allow us to keep a smaller highway footprint through our city.” ODOT responded and is supportive of exploring alternate mobility standards.
The Seaside Transportation System Plan (Seaside TSP) project team will consider how the seasonal nature of traffic in Seaside affects how the highway functions relative to state and federal standards. The team will analyze summer peak travel periods relative to the average mid-year weekday as part of developing the Seaside TSP. “We hope to share preliminary findings with the community in early winter,” said Ingrid Weisenbach, ODOT’s senior planner. She also said that the project team will provide regular updates at www.SeasideTSP.com, where the public can also access maps, presentations and draft recommendations.
The Seaside TSP is required identify the needs and guide future investments in the Seaside’s transportation system for the next 20 years. For project materials and to view the letters from the City and ODOT, visit www.SeasideTSP.org.
