Oregon Travel and Activity Survey to begin next week

Transportation related organizations partner to gather transportation data

Contractors working on behalf of many transportation related agencies, including the Oregon Department of Transportation, will begin a travel survey next week in the Salem area.

A random sampling of residents will be surveyed via telephone and may be asked to fill out a travel diary for a 24 hour period. The data will be used to create transportation models that will help local, regional and state officials evaluate and prioritize transportation projects.

“This is an opportunity to make sure that local and state jurisdictions have accurate data and select the most effective transportation projects,” said Adam Torgerson, ODOT Spokesperson.

The Oregon Modeling Steering Committee (OMSC) will oversee the project. The Federal Highway Administration, Oregon Department of Transportation, Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development, Oregon Department of Energy, and Portland METRO are just a few of the organizations who are participating on the committee.

The OMSC has contracted with NuStats, a professional transportation survey firm, to help design and execute this survey. NuStats’ sister firm, DataSource, will contact area residents. All contractors will inform households that they are calling concerning the Oregon Travel and Activity Survey on behalf of the OMSC. In order to ensure a representative sample, each household will also be asked a series of detailed questions about the household’s access to transportation and its socioeconomic characteristics.

This is the first survey of its type in more than a decade. It will include approximately 17,000 households and will take about four years to complete.
