ODOT to install new left turn signals in Seaside
09/06/2007
SEASIDE - Flaggers will manage traffic while ODOT performs signal maintenance and installs a new type of left-turn signal at the intersection of U.S. 101 (Roosevelt Drive/Pacific Coast Highway) and Broadway Drive during the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 11.  Work is expected to begin at 8 p.m. and be completed by 4 a.m.

The new signals will use a flashing yellow arrow to notify motorists turning left from U.S. 101 that they may turn but must yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians. The flashing yellow arrow replaces the previous standard circular green light to indicate that those turning left must yield.
The new signal design was part of a nationwide study by the Federal Highway Administration that reviewed federal standards for left turn signals. They are now a standard form of what is called protected/permissive left turn phasing.

“The Federal Highway Administration found that the flashing yellow arrows make it clearer that drivers need to yield,” said ODOT Region 2 Signal Operations Engineer Craig Black. “Studies have found that some people think green means go no matter what shape the signal light is. The new signal is designed to make the intersection safer and more efficient.”

Routine signal maintenance activities will take place on the signals at U.S. 101 and Pacific Way, in Gearhart, during the daytime on Sept. 13.  Those lights will be off, and traffic will be controlled by flaggers.  Please drive with caution.
