09/17/2007
COTTAGE GROVE — A contractor for the Oregon Department of Transportation will begin demolishing the London Road (Sixth Street) Bridge over Interstate 5 on Monday night, Sept. 24. This work will require the closure of a 4-mile section of the freeway over four nights.

The southbound lanes of I-5 will close at 10 p.m. Monday and reopen at 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25. Demolition work will again occur over the southbound lanes at 10 p.m. Tuesday, with the freeway reopening by 6 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26. Southbound drivers will exit I-5 at the Cottage Grove/Dorena Lake Exit 174 and detour south through town on Highway 99. Motorists will rejoin I-5 at Exit 170.

Beginning at 10 p.m. Wednesday, the contractor will begin demolition of the remaining portion of the bridge over the northbound lanes of I-5. The freeway will reopen at 6 a.m. Thursday. The closure will again go into effect at 10 p.m. Thursday with the interstate reopening at 6 a.m. Friday. Northbound drivers on I-5 will leave the freeway at the OR-99 Business/Cottage Grove Exit 170, detour north through town on Highway 99, and rejoin I-5 at Exit 174.

After demolishing the London Road Bridge, workers will begin rebuilding it. The new bridge is scheduled to reopen April 1, 2008. ODOT reduced the schedule for replacing the bridge from 12 months to eight months in response to concerns from residents and businesses in Cottage Grove.

The contractor, Capital Concrete Construction, has set up a project trailer at the corner of Sixth Street and London Road for the public to receive additional information. Drivers should visit www.TripCheck.com or call 511 for the most current traffic advisories.
