Interstate 5 overnight lane closures delayed
09/24/2007
COTTAGE GROVE — Plans to begin demolition of the London Road (Sixth Street) Bridge over Interstate 5 in Cottage Grove on Monday night have been delayed following the discovery of asbestos in some areas of the existing bridge.

An initial test conducted earlier this month showed no sign of asbestos. Quality control managers later requested another test that included a larger sampling of the bridge. That subsequent test, which examined areas previously overlooked, found asbestos in some bridge joint material.

An asbestos abatement contractor will remove and contain the material this week. ODOT tentatively expects to begin bridge demolition the week of Oct. 1, unless there are delays in removing the asbestos.

Once demolition begins, a 4-mile section of I-5 will be closed over four nights. Once the asbestos abatement contractor examines the bridge and makes a report, ODOT will be able to set a demolition schedule.

After demolishing the London Road Bridge, workers will begin rebuilding it. The new bridge is scheduled to reopen April 1, 2008. ODOT reduced the schedule for replacing the bridge from 12 months to eight months in response to concerns from residents and businesses in Cottage Grove.
